The Mediterranean pantry
Name: The Mediterranean Pantry
Client: Visit Valencia – Valencia City Council. A project commissioned by WAY Agency.
Work conceptual description:
Rooted in the connection between product and land, this project highlights Valencia’s culinary essence through the mandarin and Albufera rice. The pieces symbolize the region’s rich agricultural heritage, blending creativity with local materials to honor both tradition and landscape.
This project celebrates Valencia’s culinary richness through two emblematic pieces: a Mandarin Salt Shaker, reduced to its purest form and a Rice Cup inspired by the rice fields of the Albufera in spring, designed to measure the perfect amount of rice for a paella. The concept focuses on distilling the essence of these local staples into functional, beautiful ceramic objects that honor the region’s culture and landscape.
Work technical description:
The mandarin salt shaker was designed by reducing the fruit’s form to three essential elements: vibrant orange color, a pentagonal perforation pattern, and a round shape. The rice cup, tinted green to reflect the Albufera’s hues, was crafted for precise rice measurement and ergonomic handling. Challenges included maintaining consistency across 5000 hand-thrown units, ensuring accurate perforations, and controlling deformation during the drying process.
The pieces are fired at up to 1280º.
Sustainability:
Aligned with Visit Valencia’s KM 0 commitment, this project sourced clay 6 km from the studio and used cork stoppers from a local shop with origins in Castellón, ensuring sustainability through local materials and responsible production practices.the Mm
